Booking High Paying Freight is Something We Strive for Everyday.
But… Ask me how much I Hate Booking an “Awesome Load” on Thursday or Friday that is Picking up the Following Week!
I get so aggravated with booking awesome paying loads on Thursday or Friday, only to have the Broker “Pull the Load” on Monday with the excuse from the Broker (Pick One):
A. The shipper moved the freight themselves over the weekend – What it really means: I never had an exclusive on the load, another Broker took it…
B. The Shipper changed the pick-up or delivery time – What it really means: I found a cheaper carrier, so I wasted your time – LOL
C. The Shipper “Double Booked” the load – What it really means: I am incompetent
D. Get a voicemail stating that he/she had a family emergency and had to leave early – What it really means: I am avoiding my responsibility or communication, but you had better not or we will deduct from your Rate Confirmation.
Everyday is a learning experience, just when you think you have seen it all a new episode slaps you in the face!
Recently I was awarded a nice load from Charlotte, NC to Merrifield, MN through a Broker who is out of St Cloud, MN. I had never done business with them before, so I wasn’t too sure what to expect.
The Broker needed $165,000.00 in Cargo Insurance instead of the usual $100,000.00, however my Insurance Agent told me that it may take well into the following week to get a quotation to up the Insurance Coverage.
I went to work looking for a Gap or Spike Insurance Rider (Or Similar) from one of those temporary Insurance Agents.
The Broker had told me that he would hold the load for me until the following Tuesday, however on Monday he was on my ass to get the coverage taken care of.
I finally found a temp policy that would cost us $250.00 so I let the Broker know that I could buy it, but that I needed him to guarantee that if the load got cancelled that they would reimburse the $250.00 back to me.
Well, as you can guess that went over like a “Lead Balloon”, the Broker insisted that his Customer NEVER cancelled their loads and that being said, he would not guarantee reimbursing me if the load fell through!!! WOW… What am I missing here?
We decided to take a chance and go with the load so I called the Broker to let him know that the Insurance Agent would be sending over the “Rider”, but he didn’t answer the phone call.
Almost immediately after leaving a message, I received an email from the Broker telling me that we were off the load and he found another carrier – Damn that was fast!
So, which of the “Excuses” above should I give to this Broker, I’m thinking it is “B”!
Through a lot of hard work and a number of phone calls, I managed to get back to work Booking High Paying Freight Loads after this incident, so let’s hope the load stays until this afternoon!
Now that I have “Unloaded” on the Broker, I need to come up with the best ways to keep this situation in check, what do you think?
